Halloween Read-A-Thon: TBR

I’ve finally put together a spooky TBR for the 6 book Halloween Read-A-Thon hosted by Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews. I’ve got a few creepy reads sitting on my shelves so I’m looking forward to this. You can use the same book for multiple challenges but I’m going to attempt a different book per challenge….but if you see one book appear twice at the end of the challenge, we’ll pretend I didn’t say that.

Without further ado, here’s everything you need to know to participate:

💀 The read-a-thon is going to run from the 10th October – 31st October. This was decided by an extremely scientific Twitter poll.

💀 You can join in at any time until the end of the read-a-thon.

💀 You can read as many or as little books as you want!!!

💀 The books HAVE to be horror, thriller and/or have some kind of supernatural element!! Except for one challenge, but more on that below. I’m sorry if these genres aren’t your cup of tea, but it wouldn’t really be a Halloween themed read-a-thon otherwise.

💀 When posting your TBR link back to this post so other people can join in!! Share the spooky love!! If you don’t have a blog that’s okay!! You can post your TBR on Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads, YouTube – ANYWHERE!!

💀 Use the hashtag #HalloweenWR to share your progress on social media!!

Read-A-Thon TBR

costume-party

🕸 Pretty self explanatory. There’s no “guidelines” if you think a cover is creepy for whatever reason then it counts!

dont-stand-so-close

What would you do if a young girl knocked on your door and asked for your help?

If it was snowing and she was freezing cold, but you were afraid and alone?

What would you do if you let her in, but couldn’t make her leave?

What if she told you terrible lies about someone you love, but the truth was even worse?

Stella has been cocooned in her home for three years. Severely agoraphobic, she knows she is safe in the stark, isolated house she shares with her husband, Max. The traumatic memories of her final case as a psychologist are that much easier to keep at a distance, too.

But the night that Blue arrives on her doorstep with her frightened eyes and sad stories, Stella’s carefully controlled world begins to unravel around her…

Okay, so the covers not the creepiest, but this is a highly anticipated read, and that girl on the cover does look quite creepy in a ‘there’s matches on the cover, she going to burn your house down’ kind of way.

haunted-house

🕸 By Supernatural or Paranormal I mean books that feature things such as: ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves ect.

the-walking-dead

In Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor. The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice: whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement, or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him.

It’s got Zombies in it so it’s a go!

urban-legends

🕸 In my opinion people are scarier than monsters so for Horror or Thriller this means a book where real people are the ones who are causing all the scariness.

normalHe lives on your street, in a nice house with a tidy garden. He shops at your local supermarket. He drives beside you, waving to let you into the lane ahead of him. He’s the perfect neighbour. But he also has an elaborate cage in a secret basement under his garage.

And he thinks it’s perfectly normal to kidnap young women and keep them captive.

This is how it’s been for a long time. It’s normal…and it works. Perfectly.

But this time it’s different

I think this one is a perfect fit for Urban Legends.

witching-hour1

🕸 Again, pretty self explanatory. Fun fact: the witching hour is 3am-4am, but obviously I’m not going to force you all to read at that time 😅. Unless you’re like me and have insomnia. So just read a book after the sun has set! This doesn’t have to be done in one night! You can read a book at night for the duration of the read-a-thon.

Nevernight.jpgDestined to destroy empires, Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Six years later, the child raised in shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day she lost everything.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Red Church is no ordinary school, but Mia is no ordinary student.
The shadows love her.
And they drink her fear.

The hashtag for this book is #stabstabstab so I think it’s an adequate choice!

trick-or-treat

🕸 There’s two options for this challenge. You can choose TRICK and read a scary book you’ve been putting off OR you can choose TREAT and read any book you want from ANY genre (not just horrors ect.)

Americanah.jpgFrom the award-winning author of ‘Half of a Yellow Sun,’ a powerful story of love, race and identity.

As teenagers in Lagos, Ifemelu and Obinze fall in love. Their Nigeria is under military dictatorship, and people are fleeing the country if they can. The self-assured Ifemelu departs for America. There she suffers defeats and triumphs, finds and loses relationships, all the while feeling the weight of something she never thought of back home: race. Obinze had hoped to join her, but post-9/11 America will not let him in, and he plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London.

Thirteen years later, Obinze is a wealthy man in a newly democratic Nigeria, while Ifemelu has achieved success as a blogger. But after so long apart and so many changes, will they find the courage to meet again, face to face?

I pick TREAT, mainly because this book is on loan to me from my friend’s sister so I need to read it soonish and give it back.

all-hallows-eve

🕸 Read six books! Your sixth book can be any scary book you want. Only do this if you want! I know how it is to feel intimidated by read-a-thons so I really wanted to try and make this as relaxing as possible. There’s probably no way I’m going to be able to do this, but it’s fun to try!

I’m torn between Red Dragon by Thomas Harris  or House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski……so for now I’ll leave this one open.

**

And there we have it folks, the Halloween Read-A-Thon TBR…. ‘All Hallows Eve’ is still open so if you have any creepy reading recommendation, let me know…

  1. Don’t Stand So Close looks really good! I’m also excited about Nevernight! Red Dragon is my favorite movie based on a Thomas Harris book; I really need to read it! Happy haunted reading and good luck! 😀
