2017 Beat The Backlist: TBR

How exciting is it to get your hands on a newly released book, even more so when it’s not even been published yet!? There are so many books published every day that I fear some of the older books on my shelf won’t ever get read. So I thank Misty @ Mistysbookspace for bringing the 2017 Beat the Backlist Reading Challenge to my attention. This challenge is hosted by Austine @ novelknight, and is focused on knocking off titles that have been on your TBR for a while and it runs for the entire year. The only rule is the books must be released prior to 2017.

To really clear my backlist, I’m only focusing on books I own that have been released in or prior to the 90’s. While I may have the newer editions, I’m going by when they were first published. I’m aiming to read one book from the list each month. If I manage to read all 12 books before the end of the year, I’ll pat myself on the back and update it. It seems totally do-able right, wrong, have you seen some of the amazing titles due to be released next year, not to mention the fantastic titles released in the last few years.

To me this challenge is more of a reminder of the older books I own and I’m hoping by sharing this post (and sticking the list of books on my wall so I don’t forget) I’ll actually read some of them. In no particular order, I give you my:

2017 BEAT THE BACKLIST READING CHALLENGE TBR

  1. The Women in White – Wilkie Collins (1859)
  2. Red Dragon – Thomas Harris (1981)
  3. The Mystery of the Yellow Room – Gaston Leroux (1907)
  4. Jamaica Inn – Daphne du Maurier (1936)
  5. Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier (1938)
  6. The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck (1939)
  7. Frenchman’s Creek – Dapne du Maurier (1941)
  8. The Collector – John Fowles (1963)
  9. The Day of the Jackal – Frederick Forsyth (1971)
  10. Perfume – Patrick Suskind (1985)
  11. The Deceiver – Frederick Forsyth (1991)
  12. Trainspotting – Irvine Welsh (1993)

A few of these books are listed in the Amazon 100 Crime Books and Thrillers to Read in a Lifetime challenge I’m also completing so that ticks two boxes.

Are you taking part in any reading challenges next year? (or as I’m now referring to them, reading guides, no pressure, just a reminder of what books are on my shelf, and if you never see an update on this challenge again, know I failed, I’m deeply distressed and we are to never mention it again.)

***

As this is my last post before Christmas, I would like to wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS. If you don’t celebrate Christmas then I wish you a HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

  1. Oh, I should definitely check this one out! I failed to read so many of my YA anticipated releases this year because I was too busy catching up on thrillers I missed. It’s bothering me so much, and I really need to get the pile down a little. 😂

  2. Good luck with your challenge Janel. By default as I’m aiming to clear my NetGalley backlog I should formally do this as they’ll all be pre 2017. Have a great Christmas and all best wishes for 2017 and the challenge xx

      1. I’m hoping to attack some of the backlog – don’t hold your breath! Just done the food shopping and plenty of tea, hot chocolate and biscuits in the basket to aid the process. There’s just the two of us here, so we have a quiet Christmas doing exactly what we like, when we like – perfect 🙂

  3. This is a brilliant challenge! I tend to read a lot of older Literature for my University course so I won’t be taking part in this, but it’s such a good idea for those who don’t read much older Literature! P.S. I HIGHLY recommend Rebecca. Such a brilliant book!

    1. I’ve been meaning to read Rebecca every since I bought it but always got side-tracked 😔. PERFUME is going to be my January read, maybe I’ll make Rebecca my Feb one 🤔. I need to stop neglecting my own book in favour of reverie copies 😂 so hopefully this will help!

  4. Oh, this is such a good idea! I’ve got so many books I’ve bought this year that I haven’t got round to reading… I might join you for this one! Have a great Christmas x

  5. Yep! I’ll be participating in this challenge, as well as the #DAReadAThon. I haven’t gotten my TBR up for the Beat the Backlist challenge, but yours is looking pretty good! I wish you the best of luck during the challenge too!

      1. You’re welcome! The #DAReadAThon is the “Dumbledore’s Army Readathon” hosted by Aentee @ readatmidnight.com. It’s a diverse Readathon to get people to read more diversely. I posted my TBR for it about a week ago if you wanna check it out. If I wasn’t on the app, I’d post a link to the sign up post, but it won’t let me. So if you just go to http://www.readatmidnight.com, then you should see it! Hope you join in! It starts on the 1st and runs till the 15th.

  6. First off I’d like to say have a wonderful Christmas break.
I like the words reading guide, much less harsh than challenge! I have signed up to read at 36 books owned before 1 January 2017 on Goodreads and I will be doing the 20 books of summer challenge for which I chose physical books from my own shelves, so I’m hoping to reduce my TBR this year. Although this week alone I have received 6 books for review… I’m being set up to fail before I start!

    1. Haha I think that’s the hardest thing for a reviewer, finding the balance between review copies and our own books. So hopefully these will help us read some of the books on our shelves, it’s so hard to stay away from the new releases though so I’m being realistic about it lol.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas too!x
