April 2017 #WrapUp

Coming to you a day late is April’s wrap up – I was a day early with my book haul post so maybe the universe wanted to restore some balance, yin and yang and all that jazz!

This month I read a total of 13 books; some I managed to review in April, the rest will follow this month – which works out well as it’s coursework and exam season at uni, so I won’t be able to read as much so these scheduled reviews will keep my blog ticking nicely over [while I’m stressing out over my lack of knowledge on the human anatomy, damn you biology exam!] Right, back to the wrap up….

The Good:

The standout 5 star reads of the month were:

Block 46 by Johana Gustawsson, quite possibly my favourite book of the year so far and will definitely feature in my Top Ten Books of 2017 – review to follow as part of the blog tour on 3rd May.

Making a Case for Innocence: True Stories of a Criminal Defense Investigator by April Higuera, a great True Crime read for those interested in the [failings of the] criminal justice system – reviewed here.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker – review to follow as soon as I can fathom a review worthy of this book!

Also read and reviewed this month:

Black Water by Louise Doughty

Last Breath by Robert Bryndza

Before It’s Too Late by Jane Isaac

Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Perfect Days by Raphael Montes

Reviews coming soon:

Short Story Sunday – Mini Reviews:

Agoraphobic: Inside Out by Sara Secora

The Caretaker by Dan Klefstad

Dead over Hills by Theresa Braun

Three Weeks Dead by Rebecca Bradley

Other bookish posts this month:

Book Tag: My Life in Books

Blog Tour | Book Extract: Fatal Music by Peter Morfoot

Award! #TheLiebsterAward (part 1)

The New:

To see the newest additions to my shelves check out this month’s Urbane Book Club ‘Box’ and April’s Book Haul.

Criminally Good Book Club:

May’s book is The Dry by Jane Harper.

The Dry by Jane Harper.jpg

Luke Hadler turns a gun on his wife and child, then himself. The farming community of Kiewarra is facing life and death choices daily. If one of their own broke under the strain, well…
When Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to Kiewarra for the funerals, he is loath to confront the people who rejected him twenty years earlier. But when his investigative skills are called on, the facts of the Hadler case start to make him doubt this murder-suicide charge.
And as Falk probes deeper into the killings, old wounds start bleeding into fresh ones. For Falk and his childhood friend Luke shared a secret… A secret Falk thought long-buried… A secret which Luke’s death starts to bring to the surface…

And that’s a wrap, I hope you all had a very bookish April and I wish you an even bookishier May! (Yes, I did just make up the word bookishier, I have every faith it’ll catch on, and if not, in a few months time, this post will be lost in the archives!)

  1. I agree with Sam…if not a new daily word one a week will work:) I wasn’t sure I wanted to read Block 46 due to the historical fiction part of it but you just made me take notice calling it your fav of 2017 so far! Will wait for your review:)

    1. The cover sucked me in and I really wasn’t expecting to love this story the way I did – it has well and truly put French Noir on the map!
And like I said to Sam, the first words free, after that I charge lol

  2. What a great month you had!
Criminally Good Book Club, I love that, I’m in! The Dry has been on my list to read for months now, this is just the motivation I need to pick it up. Plus, just a few days ago, I saw that book 2 (Force of Nature) is coming out in February 2018, that’s motivation #2 🙂
Good luck with your coursework work and exams at uni this month!

  3. It looks like you had a fab month in reading in April 🙂 I’m almost finished reading Block 46 and agree that it’s an incredible book. I think we share a blog tour date on Wednesday so I’ll look forward to reading your review then. Hope May is full of great books. Happy reading 🙂

  4. I’m reading Block 46 and it’s hard to put it down to work! 🙂 I’m gonna get Agoraphobic: Inside Out just to see if I can relate to what’s being said, I’m always curious as it’s not something we often find in stories, and many people don’t have a good idea of what it is!
I wish you a great May!

    1. Ooo Block 46 is great!! As is Agoraphobic- it’s just a quick insight but I think for people who have no idea about it, it’s great for raising awareness.
Wishing you a fantastic May also 😊
