Book Review: Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine (Stillhouse Lake #1)

Stillhouse Lake - Rachel Caine

Stillhouse Lake is this month’s Criminally Good Book Club book and what a good book it was! Stillhouse Lake is a lesson in paranoia.

Book Description:

Gina Royal is the definition of average – a shy Midwestern housewife with a happy marriage and two adorable children. But when a car accident reveals her husband’s secret life as a serial killer, she must remake herself as Gwen Proctor – the ultimate warrior mom.

With her ex now in prison, Gwen has finally found refuge in a new home on remote Stillhouse Lake. Though still the target of stalkers and Internet trolls who think she had something to do with her husband’s crimes, Gwen dares to think her kids can finally grow up in peace.

But just when she’s starting to feel at ease in her new identity, a body turns up in the lake – and threatening letters start arriving from an all-too-familiar address. Gwen Proctor must keep friends close and enemies at bay to avoid being exposed – or watch her kids fall victim to a killer who takes pleasure in tormenting her. Book Review: Here and Gone by Haylen Beck

Here and Gone - Haylen Beck

This fast-paced thrill ride is my first five star read of July!

Book Description:

Here and Gone is a gripping, wonderfully tense suspense thriller about a mother’s desperate fight to recover her stolen children from corrupt authorities.

It begins with a woman fleeing through Arizona with her kids in tow, trying to escape an abusive marriage. When she’s pulled over by an unsettling local sheriff, things soon go awry and she is taken into custody. Only when she gets to the station, her kids are gone. And then the cops start saying they never saw any kids with her, that if they’re gone than she must have done something with them…

Meanwhile, halfway across the country a man hears the frenzied news reports about the missing kids, which are eerily similar to events in his own past. As the clock ticks down on the search for the lost children, he too is drawn into the desperate fight for their return. Continue reading “Book Review: Here and Gone by Haylen Beck”

Book Review: Three Days and a Life by Pierre Lemaitre

Three Days and a Life - Pierre Lemaitre

Blood Wedding was the first book I read by Lemaitre and I absolutely loved it – I gave it all the stars on Goodreads! So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw he was releasing a new book. Three Days and a Life publishes in hardback on 13th July.

Book Description:

Antoine is twelve years old. His parents are divorced and he lives with his mother in Beauval, a small, backwater town surrounded by forests, where everyone knows everyone’s business, and nothing much ever happens. But in the last days of 1999, a series of events unfolds, culminating in the shocking vanishing without trace of a young child. The adults of the town are at a loss to explain the disappearance, but for Antoine, it all begins with the violent death of his neighbour’s dog. From that one brutal act, his fate and the fate of his neighbour’s six year old son are bound forever.

In the years following Rémi’s disappearance, Antoine wrestles with the role his actions played. As a seemingly inescapable net begins to tighten, breaking free from the suffocating environs of Beauval becomes a gnawing obsession. But how far does he have to run, and how long will it take before his past catches up with him again? Continue reading “Book Review: Three Days and a Life by Pierre Lemaitre”
